Dada

DADA is an artistic movement that began in Switzerland in 1916 and it arouse as a reaction to World War 1. DADA was influenced by the ideas and innovations from various early avant-garde’s such as Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism and Expressionism. Its output was diverse, it ranged from performance art, to poetry, photography, sculpture, painting and collage.

DADA’s aesthetic provided a powerful influence on artists in many cities. It was mainly influenced by the mockery of materialistic and nationalistic attitudes. Its influence was felt in cities ranging from Berlin, Paris, New York and Cologne, all of which generated their own group of enthusiasts.

For the artists within this movement, the aesthetic of their work wasn’t as important as the ideas and messages that the work conveys.

“For us, art is not an end in itself,” wrote Dada poet Hugo Ball, “but it is an opportunity for the true perception and criticism of the times we live in.”

The movement is believed to have dissipated with the arrival of Surrealist in France.
